The current efforts to deny climate science are an organized campaign dating back 20 years when the fossil fuel industry tried to stifle action on global warming, said Greenpeace. Its report titled, “Dealing in Doubt: The Climate Denial Industry and Climate Science“, the group points an accusing finger at ExxonMobil of being the ringleader in the “campaign of denial“. It can be recalled that Exxon was a prominent member of the now-defunct Global Climate Coalition, the foremost industry group established in 1989 to refute findings of the then newly-formed UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Since Exxon and Mobil merger in 1998, the oil giant has spent about $23 million to oppose climate actions, Greenpeace said.
