2008 RNC Roundup, Last Day: We’ll Drill New Oil Wells Now

Now that John McCain has delivered his nomination speech, one thing is clear: Drill! drill! drill! has emerged as a key plank in the candidate's energy, economic and national security strategy. And the GOP loves it.

McCain:

We'll produce more energy at home. We will drill new wells off-shore, and we'll drill them now. We'll drill them now.

On top of oil exploration, McCain said:

We'll build more nuclear power plants.

We'll develop clean-coal technology.

We'll increase the use of wind, tide, solar, and natural gas.

We'll encourage the development and use of flex-fuel, hybrid and electric automobiles.

Be skeptical of the last two promises for this reason alone: McCain missed all eight votes on renewable energy legislation this year. It's also worth nothing that in his finale speech of well over 4,000 words, the one-time maverick on national carbon regulation didn’t mention climate change. Not once.

Joe Romm parses all of the McCain energy claims here. He finds ten flat-out lies -- six more than in Palin’s speech.

Meanwhile, Gristmill clips the energy snippets from the other big speeches of the evening and concludes:

Joe Lieberman is still the only person to mention either "global warming" or "climate change" in an official speech.

There are no more chances to change that. Party's over at the RNC. And offshore oil drilling dominated the conversation to an almost ridiculous degree. In fact, while every major speaker waxed on the importance of drilling, there wasn't a peep out of anyone on climate change and its profitable solutions on the national stage.

So why drilling? NPR explains in "Charting McCain's Unlikely Rise to Nominee:"

The more he talked about drilling, the better McCain did in the polls.

Only time will tell if harping on the issue helps to give McCain a "win, baby, win" come November.
