Clean Energy Economy to Deliver Job Security for 14 Million US Workers

America’s clean energy revolution will deliver millions of new and decent green-collar jobs. Much has been made of that.

But what about existing workers -- and their jobs?

Good news: Some 14 million of them in 45 different occupations -- nearly one-tenth of the US workforce -- stand to benefit, too.

That's the compelling conclusion of a major new report by the University of Amherst-Massachusetts, commissioned by NRDC and endorsed by a coalition of labor and green groups. Its fitting name? "Job Opportunities for the Green Economy.”

Have a look inside the report (pdf), and you’ll see that for the first time ever it paints a quantitative picture of just how many workers could feasibly apply their current skills to a green marketplace. (You can find state-by-state fact sheets here.)

Specifically, it looks at the needs of six green industries/global warming solutions, all with the potential to put America back on track for jobs: building retrofitting, mass transit, fuel-efficient automobiles, wind power, solar power and cellulosic biomass fuels.

And guess what the researchers found?

Sheet metal workers, machinists, truck drivers, train operators, software engineers, civil engineers, roofers, insulators, electricians – and at least 35 other professions – are all well-trained for these industries, in every state of the nation, right now.

America has an able army of green workers at its disposal, already? Uh-huh.

And with relatively little re-skilling, they could help to jump-start -- and sustain -- the nation's clean energy economy.

Good for America, good for US workers.

Remember: these are the same jobs that are being eroded each day from the economic downturn -- going overseas or being dumped altogether.
