Tibet, Land of Lithium

Green Energy News has picked up on something interesting in the middle of the Olympic controversy.
Tibet is a treasure trove of lithium.
In fact, it boasts the largest source of known lithium reserves in the whole world, according to the China Tibet Information Center.
The lithium is mined by China at the Chabyer Salt Lake -- one of the three largest salt lakes in the world. It sits at 14,400 feet.
And on the back of Chabyer’s riches, the Chinese have become the largest producers and consumers of lithium-ion batteries in the world. They now have the capacity to produce 19 billion pieces each year.
And that’s bound to soar as demand for lithium skyrockets -- from cell phones and laptops, and the pending boom for lithium-reliant electric cars.
Is this to suggest that China’s interest in Tibet is lithium?
No, it obviously isn’t.
But with China under the world spotlight, it seems a fine time to consider again the backstory of where the stuff we consume in the West comes from -- and its true costs.
