Google's New Search Function: The Best Eco-Engine

This is worth a look. Google has put a slew of hybrids and plug-ins to the test with real drivers on real roads. And it's uploading the results right now, straight from each car’s laptop and wireless data card to this website, using a home-grown methodology.

The winner so far?

The plug-in hybrid Toyota Prius. Google reports that it’s getting an average of about 66 mpg under normal driving conditions. That’s more than double the efficiency of the US fleetwide fuel economy of 26.6 mpg. And it also means that the plug-in Prius is about 25 percent more efficient than the traditional hybrid, which is clocking in at 44.6 mpg.

Not surprisingly, the Google data also shows that the plug-in Prius is emitting 66.2 percent fewer C02 emissions than the average car in America.

The website is a project of Google.org’s RechargeIt Initiative.

And by pitting plug-in hybrids against conventional gas and hybrid cars, it’s goal is to showcase the electric car's advantages -- and to spur its growth.

To get there, Google first amassed its own small hybrid fleet of conventional Prius and Ford Escape Hybrid cars, adding several that were retrofitted for plug-in use, for comparison's sake.

And then came the testing.

All the cars were outfitted with the same complex data systems that can measure technical and environmental performance -- and track battery usage. The results are now pouring in, and RechargeIt’s new blog -- launched last week -- has promised to be a forum for explaining them.

The demo plug-in fleet is still relatively tiny, but Google is shooting to add 100 more to its corporate fleet.

And:

We will be connecting the Google fleet of cars to solar charging stations on campus to demonstrate the role that renewable electricity can play in replacing gasoline and other fossil fuels in the transportation sector.

What a comfort to know that search giant Google is assuming the role as electric car sleuth, too.

I am not surprised with this

I am not surprised with this result. The Prius has a lot to boast in terms of economy and environment-friendliness.

Interesting

I find it quite interesting to see that Google found the plug-in hybrid Toyota Prius as the best eco-engine. But I am not surprised with this result. The Prius has a lot to boast in terms of economy and environment-friendliness. With the Prius to become it's own brand, I wonder if it would still use the same toyota parts replacement when it needs repair.
