Ding Dong, Clean Coal Is Dead (For Now)

Weren't the folks at the Department of Energy listening to the President's final State of Union address?

To build a future of energy security, we must trust in the creative genius of American researchers and entrepreneurs and empower them to pioneer a new generation of clean energy technology.

Apparently not. DOE just announced it's canceling funding from FutureGen -- the one and only "clean coal" project going that was supposed to show the world how to build and run a coal-fired power plant with near zero emissions. The $1.8 billion project -- plagued by mounting costs and an ever-receding horizon for completion -- may now be dead, according to breaking news from the Associated Press (hat tip, David Roberts).

Looks like we don't need technology to deliver clean coal after all, because the cleanest coal of all is no coal at all. Eureka!

Back in October, when Teco Energy of Tampa dropped its clean coal project, FutureGen became the only game in town. Last month the town of Mattoon, Illinois was selected as the future site of FutureGen to much fanfare. And a little more than a week ago, the Washington Post revealed that the coal industry was launching a $35 million PR blitz to sell America on the mythological virtues of "clean coal" through a front group called Americans for Balanced Energy Choices. (If they only had a brain.)

Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) is incensed by the DOE decision and said he was going to complain to the President. Let's see how the other Illinois senator, Barack Obama, deals with this one.

Meanwhile, there's great joy in Munchkinland.
