100 MPG? Khosla Ups Investment in Extreme Efficiency

Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, who has built his career on nurturing startup “hits” of all stripes, has just announced that he’s upped his firm's investment in the under-the-radar Transonic Combustion, Inc. He'll also be taking a seat on its board of directors.
The 18-month-old company has built a fuel-efficient engine that can run on gas, diesel and biofuels of all kinds. It claims it's on the verge of delivering a 100 mpg sports car with its proprietary engine. And we can expect it by the third quarter of this year.
In the quest for who or what is going to define fuel efficiency, it's still anyone's game at this point -- be it the automakers or the entrepreneurs of Silicon Valley, or some combo of both. Electric plug-in hybrids or biofuels or even suped-up, greener engines.
But what's clear is this: When one one of the most influential investors in the world gets behind an idea, it's at least cause for pause -- and a blog mention, of course.
