Toyota's $40 Million Greenwash Spend No Match for Netroots & Prius Owners

When the House passed the energy bill last week that mandates a 35mpg fuel economy standard by 2020, Toyota threw their support behind it and said "We believe it's the right thing to do." What they didn't admit is that up to that moment, they had stood opposed, and had spent $40 million in a greenwashing campaign that masked their actions with expensive spin.

Here's the way Huffpost commented on the blatant hypocrisy of the Why Not? campaign:

So here's a company that could easily meet the reasonable fuel economy standards proposed; a company that's built an incredible brand image upon superior innovation, an image they're forcibly (and expensively) lauding in this new ad campaign. Why then won't Toyota get behind this crucial bit of legislation that is entirely congruous with everything the company's products--and now advertisements--stand for.

"Why not?" is exactly right.

NRDC organized a netroots campaign that generated over 80,000 letters to Toyota. The keystone of the campaign? Prius owners. The attached video commemorates the effort and thanks the car owners for their support.

But there's still more work to do on Toyota.

The company is stalling progress on development of a plug-in Prius. The story is here: Plug-In Prius in the Slow Lane.
