Wind Power Group Targets Congress in New Campaign

In a forceful nudge to Congress, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has hit the TV airwaves and launched a new campaign called the Power of Wind. Its message to Washington is to pass the national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) as part of the final energy bill.
The standard would require US utilities to generate 15 percent of the nation's electricity from renewable sources by the year 2020. About half of all US states have passed similar standards. And yet, it's one of the measures that could end up on the chopping block in a compromise deal.
Indeed, now that the 35 mpg fuel economy standard has earned the support of the auto industry, a renewables standard is the most vulnerable part of the bill.
The House is expected to pass the bill by week's end, with the standard included. Members are whipping votes as we speak, writes Hill Heat. It's the US Senate that's the cause for concern, or rather the first hurdle. Yesterday, the White House threatened a veto if the mandatory standard makes it in.
Hence AWEA's TV advertisement, which began running on Monday across the nation, but will be seen most frequently in Washington, D.C., Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas and Nebraska.
