Just One Meter of Sea Level Rise Would Put America "Under Siege"

Architecture 2030, the group that's been working to solve climate by transforming the entire building sector, just released a full-page advert called “America: Nowhere to Hide.” It tallies up the impacts of just one meter of sea level rise on the US, and points to a way out: no more dirty coal. It appeared in the NY Times yesterday.

Coal’s a complicated picture. The advert does a good job of not resorting to slogans to short-circuit its complexities.

Here’s the short of it:

With over 12,000 miles of coastline, and 53% of its population living in and around coastal cities and towns, the United States is at serious risk from even small amounts of sea level rise induced by global warming and climate change.

Beginning with just one meter of sea level rise, many coastal cities and towns will be inundated, resulting in catastrophic property and infrastructure loss with large population disruptions and economic hardship.

By calling for a moratorium on new conventional coal plants, we put an immediate cap on coal plant emissions. By phasing out existing plants, we decrease CO2 emissions, averting the more dangerous effects of climate change.

If you're hungry for more, Architecture 2030 has a paper called "Coastal Impact Study: Nation Under Siege" that elaborates on the research, as well as some useful maps by way of Google. This latest campaign comes on the heels of its earlier research and ad blitz called "Stop Coal."

The coal industry launched its own hearts and minds campaign in the form of a NY Times advert a few weeks back, as well as a website under the name America's Power.

It's no secret whose side we’re going to bat for on this one.

FINALLY SOME TALK OF SOLVING THE PROBLEM

FANTASTIC. FINALLY SOME REALISTS HAVE DECIDED TO LOOK AT THE PROBLEM AND ASK HOW BAD CAN IT BE AND WHAT CAN WE DO.

INSTEAD OF LOOKING AT IT AS A MAJOR COST; WE SHOULD BE THANKFUL WE HAVE THE TIME TO PLAN.

NEW ROAD, PIPELINES, AQUADUCTS, TRAINS, SHIP YARDS; NOW WE CAN PLAN FOR OUR NEW CITY's INFRASTRUCTURE AT REDUCED COST.

STOP ALL COASTAL BUILDING; IT WILL BE LOST. STOP ALL BEACH NURISHMENT PROJECTS; MONEY IN THE SURF. FL SHOULD NOT GO THRU WITH THEIR PLANS ON BUYING MILLIONS OF ACRES FROM THE SUGAR INDUSTRY; NOT WHEN IT WILL BE USELESS TO THEM BOTH.

WE HAVE THE BLESSING OF FORESIGHT; WE SHOULD USE IT.
