The Truth About Coal Fires

Turns out that the thousands of underground coal fires that are burning freely across the world are colossal greenhouse gas contributors. And have been for years. One economist reminds us that in China alone, the fires produce as much CO2 each year as all the cars and light trucks in the US combined.
While you'll find most of the fires in China and India, a result of coal industries that are still unregulated free-for-alls, the US has hundreds of its own.
The mos famous is in Centralia, PA. A mine fire's been burning under the borough since 1962, and it's left the once-booming town with just four residents and a hellish landscape. This Smithsonian article says it has another 250 years to go. That's when the coal to fuel the fire will run out. Centralia's fire is just one in about 40 burning in PA right now, the hardest-hit state.
Everyone knows these fires are deadly. They poison people's health. They force evacuations. They cause forest fires. They're ratcheting up global warming, just like dirty coal itself. And no one seems to have found a way to stop them. Or maybe they've just stopped trying.
Right now, the coal industry is lobbying hard to get Congress to keep it afloat for years to come. It claims it can keep America secure. But where's the proof? All we have is the evidence to the contrary, which just keeps piling up and up.
