Harvard Takes Big Green Step in 50-Year Building Plan

Harvard.sized.jpg

Harvard announced that its new 537,000 square foot science center going up in Alston would cut emissions 50% below existing national standards. Its commitment is legally enforceable -- a first for a large real-estate project -- and consistent with efforts being made at hundreds of other universities. But it's Harvard, so it gets the national spotlight.

The project will use geothermal wells, natural ventilation and natural lighting to cut fuel consumption and operating costs. It's more than a symbolic move. It's the first step of a 50-year expansion plan that will increase the campus footprint 50%. The first step of this journey of a thousand miles is in the right direction.

A good model for the long-term planning and vision needed on a national scale?
