FL Latest To Adopt CA Standards

Evidence of state leadership on climate keeps pouring in: Florida Gov. Charlie Crist announced he’s going to adopt California’s tough auto emissions standards.

They’re the toughest in the nation. They would force a 25% cut in emissions from cars and 18 percent from sport utility vehicles by the 2009 model year. (The catch is that the EPA must grant California permission to impose them. Schwarzenegger’s been battling the EPA in court for two years on the issue.)

About twelve other states are prepared to adopt them. The addition of Florida to the mix, the fourth most populous state in the nation, is a huge plus. It sends a strong political message to the courts in the case and to the feds.

Crist is signing the order on Friday during the two-day climate summit he’s hosting. He’s also signing an order that forces power companies to reduce their amount of greenhouse gas emissions to 80 percent of 1990 levels by 2050. And state utilities will have to generate 20 percent of their power from renewables.
